Publication Ethics
Background
Journal Islamic Banking (JIB) is committed to maintaining integrity, quality, and ethical standards throughout the scholarly publication process. In conducting its publication activities, JIB follows principles and best practices in scholarly publishing ethics, including relevant guidelines and flowcharts provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics. Publication ethics is a shared responsibility among authors, editors, reviewers, and journal management. All parties involved in the publication process are expected to perform their roles professionally, objectively, transparently, and responsibly. This policy provides guidance for preventing unethical publication practices and maintaining the integrity of the scholarly works published by JIB.
Authorship
Authorship should be granted to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the research and manuscript, including the development of the research idea, research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results, and preparation or substantial revision of the manuscript. All authors listed in the manuscript must approve the final version and agree to its submission for publication. Individuals who have contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements section. Any request to add, remove, or change the order of authors after acceptance must be accompanied by a clear explanation and written approval from all authors. The editor may request clarification or supporting documentation when necessary.
Responsibilities of Authors
Authors are responsible for ensuring that manuscripts submitted to JIB are original, have not been previously published, and are not under consideration by another journal. Research data and information must be presented accurately, honestly, and responsibly. All sources used in the research must be properly acknowledged and cited. Plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, and other forms of academic misconduct are not permitted. Authors must also disclose any potential conflicts of interest and sources of research funding, where applicable. If a significant error is identified in a published article, authors are expected to promptly inform the editor and cooperate in the correction, clarification, or retraction of the article when necessary.
Responsibilities of Reviewers
Reviewers are expected to assess submitted manuscripts objectively and fairly within the agreed review period. Their comments should focus on the substance and quality of the manuscript and provide clear, relevant, and academically sound reasons for their recommendations. All information obtained during the review process, including data, ideas, and unpublished findings, must be treated as confidential and must not be used for personal or third-party purposes. Reviewers should inform the editor if they identify indications of plagiarism, duplicate publication, substantial similarity with other works, or other concerns related to publication ethics. A reviewer should also decline an assignment when a personal, professional, financial, or other conflict of interest could affect the impartiality of the review.
Responsibilities of Editors
Editors of JIB are responsible for assessing manuscripts for editorial processing and publication based on academic quality, relevance to the journal’s scope, and the outcome of the peer-review process. Editorial decisions should be made fairly and independently, without discrimination based on the author’s gender, religion, ethnicity, political views, nationality, institutional affiliation, or geographical origin. Throughout the editorial process, editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and information obtained from them and ensure that editorial decisions are not influenced by personal or commercial interests. Unpublished information or materials contained in submitted manuscripts must not be used by editors or editorial staff for research or other purposes without the author’s explicit written permission.
Conflict of Interest
Authors must disclose any conflict of interest that could affect the conduct of the research or the interpretation of its findings, including financial, professional, personal, institutional, or other relevant relationships. Sources of research funding and the role of the funding organization, where applicable, should be clearly stated in the manuscript. Reviewers and editors should also disclose any circumstances that may affect their impartiality and should not participate in the review or editorial decision-making process when a conflict of interest exists with the authors, their institutions, or the research under consideration.
Human Research Ethics
Research involving human participants must be conducted in accordance with applicable research ethics standards and regulations. Where required, the research must receive approval from an appropriate ethics committee or authorized institution before the research is conducted. Authors are responsible for obtaining informed consent from participants in accordance with the nature of the research and for protecting their privacy, confidentiality, and rights. JIB may request evidence of ethical approval or other relevant documentation when necessary. A manuscript may be rejected if the research is found not to comply with applicable ethical requirements or to have failed to adequately protect the rights and interests of research participants.
Publication Misconduct
All parties involved in the publication process are expected to uphold academic integrity and responsible publication practices. Publication misconduct includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, duplicate publication, citation manipulation, undisclosed conflicts of interest, authorship violations, and violations of research ethics. When an allegation or concern regarding misconduct is raised, the editor will review the matter and may request clarification or supporting information from the parties concerned. In handling suspected cases of misconduct, JIB follows relevant publication ethics principles and, where appropriate, refers to the guidelines and flowcharts provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics. Depending on the nature and seriousness of the case, the journal may request clarification or correction, reject the manuscript, publish a correction, retract an article, or take other appropriate action to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
JIB recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies may be used as supporting tools in manuscript preparation. However, their use must be consistent with principles of academic integrity, transparency, confidentiality, and scholarly responsibility.
- For Authors
Authors may use AI or AI-assisted technologies as supporting tools during manuscript preparation, including for language editing, grammar, sentence structure, and readability. The use of AI that makes a substantive contribution to the preparation of a manuscript should be disclosed transparently. AI tools and Large Language Models (LLMs) cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because responsibility for the content and integrity of the manuscript rests with the human authors. Authors are responsible for checking and verifying any information generated or assisted by AI, including its accuracy, citations, originality, and compliance with academic standards. The use of AI must not replace the authors’ intellectual contribution or responsibility for the research design, data, analysis, findings, interpretation, or conclusions.
- For Reviewers
Reviewers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of manuscripts throughout the review process. Manuscripts, research data, unpublished findings, or other confidential information received for review must not be uploaded or entered into generative AI systems or other external tools that may store, process, or disclose such information. Review reports and evaluations should be based on the reviewer’s own academic expertise and judgment. The use of supporting tools must not compromise the confidentiality, independence, or integrity of the peer-review process.
- For Editors
Editors are responsible for protecting the confidentiality of manuscripts and information obtained throughout the editorial process. Unpublished manuscripts, research data, reviewer comments, and other confidential materials must not be uploaded or entered into generative AI systems or other external tools that may store, process, or disclose such information. The use of AI-assisted tools in editorial work must not compromise manuscript confidentiality, the objectivity of editorial decisions, or the integrity of the publication process. Editors remain fully responsible for editorial decisions and must exercise their own professional judgment when assessing manuscripts and managing the peer-review process.
Corrections and Retractions
JIB is committed to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the published scholarly record. If an error is identified after publication, the journal will assess its nature and impact and may publish a correction or clarification when appropriate. An article may be retracted when there is evidence of serious problems affecting the reliability or integrity of the publication, including data fabrication or falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, violations of research ethics, or other serious forms of misconduct. Corrections and retractions are handled through an appropriate editorial process, with relevant information communicated clearly and transparently to readers.
